Re: [GRG] Abstract for Serrano article on senescence

This is (unsurprisingly, given the author) a terrific review of what we know about the antagonistic pleiotropy of the cell senescence machinery. It doesn’t really include anything unexpected, though I agree that the specifics of why that machinery has evolved, which for basic evolutionary biology reasons needs to have been because of a beneficial function during development and/or early adulthood, has not been clear until recently and is probably still only slightly understood. What ultimately matters is that developing therapies to remove senescent cells (and indeed other cells that fall under the SENS category of “death-resistant cells”, notably anergic T cells) is a requirement in order to finish the job that evolution has left incompletely done.
