Since a good number of young adults get their ‘radio’ over the internet these days, it might be interesting to examine these effects, along with those of podcasts and other streamed audio, Pandora, etc.
Is it that ‘live’ radio involves another being sharing something in the present, or do canned programs work as well? Anecdotally, listening to a canned broadcast, or a re-broadcast is a slightly different experience. Among other things it lacks that sense that it is a shared experience. Just as watching a film in a crowded theater can be more satisfying than simply streaming it solo at home.
